The East Malaysian state of Sarawak, part of exotic island of Borneo, is home to a rich diversity of natural splendor, ethnic artistry and indigenous culture. However, because of the sheer size of the state and limited accessibility due to the under-developed transportation network, most of the efforts to promote these exist in a disparate, piece-meal form.
Bearing this in mind, AgroKraf Borneo was established to unify, amplify and magnify the indigenous artistic and agricultural presences around the state. On the one hand, this organization provides them exposure to an affluent, interested audience which leads to creating opportunities for sustainable income for ethnic communities, particularly those in Sarawak’s interiors.
One of the company’s main objectives is the creation of a sustainable arts and crafts industry in Sarawak, with ethnic artisans receiving fair value for their work, even as their artistry is more effectively brought to market, both locally and abroad. This is done through strategic collaborations with relevant authorities, corporates and community leaders.
To develop an appreciation for the intricacies and artistry of indigenous craft, AgroKraf also organizes workshops, programs and events headed by traditional master craftspeople. This not only helps expose their work to a wider audience, but also drives efforts to preserve them by creating a new generation of practitioners.
