In 2019, the Malaysian Health Ministry took a huge leap towards the cultivation of industrial hemp, allowing for the production of its fibre and seeds for commercial purposes. While use of marijuana and cannabis remain illegal, products developed from hemp extracts, primarily the natural compound cannabidiol (CBD) have already begun making an appearance in local markets.
The potential of hemp – the first cultivated crop in human history – cannot be understated. Apart from its efficacious medical properties – it has been used to treat a host of conditions from pain, anxiety and depression to diabetes and cancer - every part of the hemp plant is also useful.
Strong, durable and versatile, hemp stalks and fibres can be turned into a wide range of products including paper, ropes, fabrics, canvases and even fuel. Additionally, it has been proven to be more hardy and sustainable than oil palm, and could soon replace it as Malaysia’s leading agricultural crop.
